Oh man.

Yeah….the two cases I’m familiar with are that of John List and Ronnie DeFeo - the primary difference in those two crimes are that there was a survivor (the aforementioned List and DeFeo) and the authorities were able to more easily piece together what happened and why.

Law enforcement will, most likely, eventually arrive at a theory for why this crime happened. Sad to see.
