Some people cite it as an important document.
If we apply your method, then it shouldn’t matter to them that a physical guy named MLK did not write this letter, the author of the letter is the guy who is interesting, and so we can name *him* MLK.

we each - individually - have plenty of quotes that we are pretty sure are mlk. that’s our mlk. if we choose to believe that this fake letter is real, then that becomes part of our “real” mlk as well. in fact, every single person’s conception about who mlk “really” was IS LIKELY TO BE AT LEAST SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT THAN OTHER PEOPLE’S

i have my own idea of who “jesus” was, which i arrive at by picking and choosing from the evidence

i don’t expect other peoples “jesus” to be the same
