re: #502 calcajun

I cried at the thought of Nabby’s operation and cancer. An 18th century mastectomy without anesthesia…cringe worthy.

What people went through…a hard time in so many ways. My husband had to leave the room for that scene of the miniseries.

I was struck by how much John and Abigail loved one another, and how much their work took them apart from each other. A blessing that they lived to old age, so that they could be together for that time.

I think I like the Adamses so much because in lifestyle and outlook they’re the most familiar to me of the key figures of that time. They really were just middle-class New Englanders who were willing to go to great lengths for their country. Great people, without Virginia mansions or trading empires to fall back on. And that extraordinary marriage.
