Well, industry invests heavily in R&D, thereby advancing science, no?
They invest in applied science, not basic science. Basic science is gone into mostly by government-funded labs. And many industries don’t research competing technologies. It wasn’t the buggy manufacturers that turned into the car-makers. It wasn’t the home phone makers, in general, that became the cell-phone makers. Each generation of technology usually has new companies spearheading it; it’s rare when companies stay strong and vital through broad technology changes in their field.
