The 40-mile battery range is a bit of a misnomer. That happens to be the range at which it operates ONLY on battery power; beyond that, it self-generates power to recharge the batteries using the engine. While it may seem inefficient to make the battery pack “only” last 40 miles, I imagine that it uses a smaller battery pack and also does not drain the batteries completely dry before kicking in the charging circuit, for efficiency purposes.

/not sure I’d want to drive one on a California freeway
