re: #497 Flavia

“… You are correct that the Democrat Club is free to take itself elsewhere. But this is, indeed, a free speech issue.”

It is not a free speech issue, if what you mean by this is that it violates our constitutional first amendment right of free speech.

I am dismayed at how many people do not understand constitutionally-guaranteed “free speech”. *Only a government*, using the coercive power of the state, can violate a citizen’s free speech. Walmart can not “censor”, nor can 7-11, nor Barnes & Noble, nor Liberty University — these entities have no power to prevent people from reading, speaking, worshipping, etc. Conversely, nobody has any right to insist that some party (Liberty University, e.g.) foot the bill (or provide a forum) to disseminate one’s ideas.

I would fully expect Liberty University to refuse to allow their name to shill for the Democratic Party (and likewise vice versa).

(Personally, since I consider both parties beneath contempt, I coudn’t care less —thus my original “who cares?”. But I do care about the First Amendment; fortunately, this has nothing to do with that.)

“…The college is exposing itself as both fascist & cowardly when it comes to any differing opinions.”

“Fascist”? So, dissolving a campus club is exactly like the Third Reich?
