1979, to be exact. The Chinese did not do well in that war. The Vietnamese army was battle hardened, while the Chinese army had not fought a major war since Korea. Moreover, its troops were local forces from the south, not the better troops who were on the Soviet border. The war ultimately ended indecisively, but Vietnam has not forgotten it.

Many of the troops that fought the ‘79 war were vets of the liberation of Cambodia (yes, in this case, a communist army were liberators) and the Khemer Rouge were a Chinese client state. The Vietnamese have not forgotten what they found in Phnom Penh either…
