when i was a kid in manhattan there used to be a lot of cuban/puerto rican/salvadorenean/chinese places (“comidas criollas y chinas”), little yellow formica holes in the wall where you could get a killer dinner of arroz con pollo, maduros, cafe con leche, and flan, for under $8

when you can find them now they’ve gone upscale & it just isn’t the same
