I think that the point here is that as horrifying as what’s been going on in Iraq is, it’s pretty par for the civil war course.

Only point people are trying to make is that while these particular humans may be fighting in part over Islam, people will do this to each other for all kinds of reasons.

There’s a character in one of Neil Gaiman’s novels—a demon who was given an award for the Spanish Inquisition. What he’s never told anyone is that he had nothing to do with it. He’s realized over the years that tempting people is pretty much pointless. Humans will do shit to each other that demons couldn’t even think of, and they’ll do it without prompting.
