I believe a number of states have laws that take age difference into account, as in an 18 year old and a 16 year old is treated differently from, say, a 30 year old and a 16 year old.

Yup, I’ve seen a number of those. Basically, if one member of a relationship is under the age of consent, they have to be within a certain number of years in age or it’s statutory. It’s a decent rule of thumb as far as it goes.
