Its tough, but thats why you plan carefully.

And its a mistake (as per FBV’s story above) to think that the child can’t possibly live without them (to the point of praying for their deaths!). I’ve worked with a few people who didn’t get out of their parents home until their mid-50s, and they really started living then.

Their vocabularies increased, they started exploring their own likes, it goes on and on.

Well, I’m glad to hear this.
And this young man lives away from home for 6 months, then home for 6 months, which sounds to me a good way to make an adjustment. Other people I’ve known, however, haven’t even given their handicapped kids the benefit of training programs that are available. I’m thinking specifically of one young man who is perfectly capable of working at a simple job, but the parents won’t let him go. They are doing him a great disservice, imo.
