It is odd to note that many of the tinhorn dictators we tolerated (or even supported) such as Saddam, Qaddafi or Mubarak, were secularists. As was the regime in Afghanistan that the Taliban toppled.

“Democracy” actually meant more Islamist influence in those country’s politics.

I remember people saying essentially that thirty years ago. If the dictators and kings and such go, the fanatics will be voted in in their wake.

Stupid intractable situations.
