Oh dear God, I feel for you. I needed to jump through weeks of hoops to get that done, and in the end it took my company’s head office sending an official letter saying they were willing to vouch for me. (By that stage, it looked like they would have to hand me my first month’s pay in cash bundles.)

One option I heard about later is that HSBC will open a UK account for you from overseas. I’m not sure if that’s still true (or even if they operate in the US) but it might be worth a try.

I wouldn’t deal with HSBC. My ability to explain is limited, but suffice it to say I have learned from people I know that they are a fairly sleezy bunch.
