It depends. If the case hangs on the truthfulness of Zimmerman and his potential for violence, then a witness that claims to have seen him first hand act out with excessive violence in the past could be valid in challenging his character.

True. You can have character witnesses. But of course once that starts happening expect to see it coming from both the defense and the prosecution.
