As Merkel, herself has accepted. It was always going to be a hard-sell and even if it was, in hindsight, the wrong or, more accurately, poorly-prepared decision (if for no other reason than it bolstered the right-wing and might ultimately cut her career short) it was still a matter of making a poor decision for the right reasons.

On that score I think she is admirable.

Her career has lasted for quite some time now…longer than any US President (no term limits for German Chancellor). I think Germany made a mistake in not putting an upper limit on refugees, either in terms of absolute numbers or in terms of what percentage share of overall EU refugees.

People are taking cynical advantage of their hospitality and humanity.
