We needed more than the surge, from the beginning. We should not have gone to war on Iraq, since it distracted us from the War on Terror, but, if we were going to do so, we should have done it properly— especially when we were going in almost without allies.

We allowed things to pass that will cause harm for a long, long time— like the sectarian violence that nearly ethnically cleansed some neighborhoods.

It was a plan from people fooling themselves about our reception, and I believe part of why that is true is that those same people were fooling themselves as to the wisdom of that war.
