What did you learn?

A soldiers life is a dog’s life everywhere in the world. Sometimes you’re a pampered retriever but your still just a dog in the end.

Seriously, that’s a lot of it. When you’re down to the level of individual soldiers, it’s always more about surviving and keeping your buddies alive than about ideology. And some of his tales were rather too like some stories I’ve read over the years about what people found Germany at the end of the war.
