It’s not as easy as that. There was a time in this country—and in certain parts—that you needed to be in the Klan or have their support if you wanted to succeed at anything. Anyone who wanted to get into politics needed Klan support in parts of the south and mid-west. Men like Hugo Black, Byrd, Thurmond, Wallace, all joined more out of expediency than an earnest belief in the Klan policies. I’m not condoning what was done or the policies of the Klan— it’s just that was the way it was back then.
