I lived in Australia when the mass murder occurred in Tasmania. It horrified the country. Toy shop owners removed all gun toys and smashed them in the streets. People lamented loudly that Oz risked becoming like the US. A strict law was passed with almost universal support. And no more massacres.

Hunters didn’t feel threatened. No one yelled about protecting themselves. I was still often encouraged to get a rifle and learn how to use it safely. Not because I was scared of my neighbors, but because I was often in the outback where car collisions with large animals occur. The decent thing to do is to end the animal’s suffering quickly.

Times like these, I miss Oz….
