I’m not so sure I’m okay with this. You see, breaking off diplomatic relations has historically been one of the common last precursors before all out war breaks out.
Like, it’s a way of saying that “if you do X, war it is” without explicitly threatening war…

That’s my thought, as well. I know us laypeople make fun of the whole diplomatic process, with their strongly worded letters, kicking out diplomats, and other actions that seem to amount to nothing more than silly charades. The thing is that these things are the equivalent of non-violent warfare in the diplomatic realm, and losing the diplomatic war (in the sense of reaching the point of severing diplomatic relations) often leads to the start of an actual violent war. It’s important to pay attention to those strongly worded letters, lest we end up with another Pearl Harbor.
