I would rather their be no disincentives for the birth of children. At some point, people must have private lives, make private decisions. Unfortunately, there are consequences for having too many children. There are unfortunate consequences for many poor decisions. At some point, we have to make a decision not to create a tax penalty or credit for every area of life we wish to regulate. I find the area of regulating reproduction particularly intrusive. As for the sort of “upward mobility” you mention, I wouldn’t pay for that either if a had my druthers.

What about tax deductions for working people with children?
