His ashes were buried in a military cemetery. My grandmother actually wanted a Catholic funeral for him, but it turned out to matter that he wasn’t a Catholic.

She, in her turn, is inurned (yes, that’s a word) at a Catholic columbarium in the same city. She insisted on her urn being set in one of the glass-fronted niches, because of her claustrophobia, and instructed my aunt to choose a beautiful urn, ‘so the neighbors will be jealous’.
