I guess it’s open to interpretation. I thought the ending was a kind of relapse, but I guess other people see it as a kind of deception for the sake of ending his pain.

My experience with real life mental behavior is that people will pick comfort over rationality, and even when they are forced to admit the truth soon relapse back into denial for the sake of comfort.
