I’ve had this idea of writing a short story set in the Spanish Civil War about two friends who join the opposing sides. I haven’t really given ti too much though since I don’t know enough about the Spanish Civil War to write such a story.

The Battle for Spain: The Spanish Civil War 1936-1939
by Antony Beevor will teach you enough for short story work. That and Orwell’s Homage ot Catalonia are probably the best English language starting points.
