Humans are irrational. Religion is simply the most organised form of that irrationality. Reason and discourse barely enter into our discussions now, even in this most enlightened of ages, even the things that religion barely touches on.

Humans are naturally superstitious, but only because we see patterns in everything, but we aren’t naturally irrational. Early religion was an attempt to rationally explain events and lubricate social interactions. Many of the things we consider irrational today were considered rational at one time, they have become irrational as our understanding of our physical world, and ourselves, has grown.
