Ahmadinejad Declares Victory in Iran Election

I don’t think anyone here really thought that things would change in Iran with the nuclear program if the other guy won anyway.

However, this is a moot point. The real issue is Obama and his decision to talk to the Iranians.

Actually, I’ll be honest: I’m all for it. I’m for it for the same obvious reason that Obama is for it. I don’t really think that he believes (nor do I believe) that this will make any progress. He obviously wants to give diplomacy a chance but, in reality, is trying to gear up momentum in the international community to back him for when this effort fails.

It’s a valid point and I think a good one. Sometimes, a leader has to demonstrate that he tried all other venues before tougher measures can be taken. That is really what others in the international community are trying to say. And again, I agree: trying sometimes makes a better moral standing than not trying.

However, unlike Obama, I am not deluded by the promises of that community. Lest anyone forget, Bush also tried to do the same. He didn’t originally want to go to the U.N., but he was talked into it because of the possible moral stance he could make when Iraq failed in compliance. Likewise, Israel also suffered from the same mistake by pulling out of Gaza. It wasn’t a mistake to make that moral stance, but it was a mistake to believe that people would back you when you had the moral ground.

The fact is, while I believe inherently that it is essential for us to take the moral ground and make these gestures, I believe it is wrong to put our trust in others in the middle to back us when they fail.

I fear that when Obama discovers, much to his expectation, that Iran will not change its course during negotiations, that the U.S. will still not get the backing for tougher sanctions or, needless to say, military action when the time comes. It isn’t to say that he is deluded, but I think he might have too high an opinion of his own rhetoric at times. Who knows? But my guess is that, once again, the U.S. and Israel, with only a few key allies, will once again stand alone.
