I had actually never heard of such a thing happening before. When I realized what was going on (as Bradshaw was slowly toppling into the end zone), I was actually laughing. I hoped Bradshaw wouldn’t have to regret scoring the go-ahead touchdown in the Super Bowl, if such a thing could be regrettable.

I hang out on an IRC channel during football games and the concept comes up. It’s a more esoteric level of game strategy when you start giving up points on purpose in order to gain a better position towards potentially winning the game. And the countervailing strategy to avoid scoring in order to improve one’s chances.

Thus you get into intentional safeties, falling down on the one yard line, avoiding the end zone as long as possible (done in an Eagles game last year where a player ran along the 1-yard line a ways in order to use up time), etc.
