How does one find a loose, wandering naval mine?

You send in minesweepers and have them use active sonar. Then you hope them don’t get blown up. It’s dangerous work. Naval minefields are just as nasty as their land-based kin, though they are not banned in the same way. This is largely because they are used far less often and almost always by governments in limited areas. That still does not excuse Gaddafi, of course.
