My experience is that finding a proper cat is the way to go.

“Proper” is the operative point.

Does the cat, as a kitten, love to get belly rubs and not bite and scratch?

That’s a major plus! It will save you a lot of flesh wounds.

Does the cat make biscuits without driving its claws into the top of your thighs?

That’s a keeper!

Does the cat mark territory outside of the house and not inside? Congrats! You have a Nice Kitty, who will give you years of love and companionship.
