Honor was a word which played a big role in Southern willingness to go to war.
Also, archives are filled with memoirs of soldiers who wanted nothing to do with slavery, but felt a pride in their home state and fought for a curious form of not nationalism, but state pride.

That certainly motivated Robert E. Lee and A.P. Hill, both of whom had little use for slavery (Hill having actually freed all his slaves before the war began).
