Major reason that GOP lost in 2012 was because Romney could not mobilize The Base. They won in 2016 because Trump did an outstanding job of it.

OIne reason Dems lost in 2016 because too many voters could not generate enough enthusiasm for Hillary to get out and vote for her or were convinced that it made little or no difference.

Maybe some places. I have never seen the kind of enthusiasm I saw on Election Day as I saw in 2016.
