Honor was a word which played a big role in Southern willingness to go to war.
Also, archives are filled with memoirs of soldiers who wanted nothing to do with slavery, but felt a pride in their home state and fought for a curious form of not nationalism, but state pride.
It’s pretty easy to find southern states’ declarations war and of secession on the web. They tend to cite preservation of slavery as a driving force.
