So, if a man threatens to dismember his wife to her face, she can stand her ground and shoot him [in a red state].

Yet, if a man threatens to dismember his wife on facebook, he can’t be arrested.

I do wonder how this is that much different than writing a threatening letter. Much easier to deliver? Not taking the effort to get an envelope and pay postage?

My only guess is that it’s easier to be spur of the moment. While using a different media takes longer and implies a more serious intent?
