I’ve been reading Conscience of a Conservative, and I was struck by the chapter on the Soviet menace. First in how it could be completely rewritten by removing “Soviet” with “islamist” and still be an accurate analysis, and second how even then we didn’t take our enemies as seriously a we should have:

Seems the more things change, the more they stay the same.

So few people understood then or understand now the wisdom of Mr. Goldwater. His political heir, McCain, sure doesn’t.
