I hope this is not old news in this huge thread.
BBC-Anders Behring Breivik, 32, described his actions as “gruesome but necessary”, and said he would explain himself at a court hearing on Monday.

Looks like we see why he surrendered. He does want to use the court to espouse his insanities. Even his lawyer says he planned this for some time.
