You have to remember, I grew up in the theocratic ultra-conservative Christian culture, I know how these people think. The majority of them are terribly misinformed and are unwilling to correct this problem, but they are not mentally defective.

Which arguably is worse. Mental defect can be a medical condition and uncurable. Willful ignorance is self-inflicted, curable, and shows a huge amount of ego and hubris.
