Well, the issue of Catholic education, both in the US and in Canada, was for a long time tied to certain group’s fear of Catholic “popery”. In Canada, this was also linked to the status of Quebec and French culture (which is/was traditionally Catholic (I used both words so people could pick the one they want)).
