Kentucky has like 123. As I understand it, they were laid out so each county seat was about a day’s ride (on horseback or by wagon/carriage) from where folks lived.

Interesting. I think I remember hearing that many of the plains states have their shape due to the Homestead Act and stuff. I’m a geography nerd I concede.
