I registered R in 1980 because the Dems of the day were a lot like these right wing clowns of today. In 1980 the Republican Party was the party of pragmatism (although I knew even then what the Dixiecrats were going to do to it eventually). I think you still could have made that statement as late as 1990, but certainly by 1994, the party was already looking for a shark to jump.
