Growing up, I was beaten up and mistreated by supposedly peaceful Republicans.

The thing about Christianity is that it’s essentially founded on the idea of being persecuted. For many, many Christians, to be “like Christ” means to be targeted, being a “good Christian” is equated with being unfairly singled out and violently opposed.

So when reality doesn’t offer them this experience organically they either seek it out or invent it from whole cloth.
