Columbus wasn’t a total hack. He did make the voyage when nobody else would. As far as what he thought he discovered, maybe he thought it was still part of Asia. I don’t think anybody reached the West Coast of NA for another 50 years, so the concept of a Pacific Ocean was unknown in Western Europe. As a governor, he was vile, but you needed more than just luck to be the first to make that voyage, and keep the crews of three ships in line.
