I’m going for the one that is mostly likely to permanently damage the Salafists. The loss of their pimp state.

I’d prefer a ‘gradual change from within’ option to a war. Wars introduce massive amounts of instability into things, and someone who touches one off may find the war’s course very different than that which he (and sometimes she) planned.

I commend to your attention the example of Hannibal Barca of Carthage. He thought his conquest of Saguntum would at worst be the start of a moderate-length war where he undermined and destroyed the commonwealth system that had given Rome its place of power in Italy, only to see a much longer war end with Carthage defeated and the Iberian lands his family had fought so hard to gain for her in Roman hands.
