“The media” is a highly fractured entity, with many of the old participants struggling to stay alive. If they can’t hyper their own product they cant’ get attention, which means they can’t get advertising revenue, which means they can’t stay alive.

In depth coverage of topics, with real debate (in the best meaning of that term), is just too boring to get enough readers/viewers.

Agreed. NYT just got a spot on my weekly shitlist for slamming me with a pay wall to keep reading Nate Silver’s full blog postings. That’s a quicker way to lose readers than anything else.
