Using ‘parasite’ language is counterproductive, and not biologically correct. A parasite is something that has evolved that as a strategy for survival. A parasite doesn’t have a specially-prepared-by-the-host mechanism for keeping it alive and healthy, it takes advantage.
Well, I for the most part agree that using the term ‘parasite’ in this situation probably is not very helpful, if only because it’s prone to produce a backlash from a lot of people that might otherwise be sympathetic. And I’ll admit it makes even me somewhat uncomfortable at times.
That being said, I don’t think the use of the term is as wrong as you make it out of be. Under common usage of the term, it certainly fits the situation to a degree.
