Unfortunately, there isn’t anything resembling leadership in the party at the moment to help formulate and guide a winning strategy.

The problem is that there are so many competing factions within the party right now. If you move towards libertarianism, the Christianists and neocons will bail, move towards more engagement overseas and lose credibility on the deficit argument, embrace fundamentalism and lose the rationalists, support personal and civil liberties and the authoritarians will walk. The GOP might be on it’s last legs - I honestly have no idea how it can recover after Bush.
