THIS DAY IN HISTORY
May 14, 1796: Jenner tests smallpox vaccine
He was late: see Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. en.wikipedia.org
She began following the Oriental folk method of inoculation for smallpox while she was in the Ottoman Empire, and vaccinated her son in 1718. She pushed inoculation when she returned to England, but the medical establishment refused it as “fake news.” Jenner used cowpox rather than smallpox, which was safer, and became the standard.
