OK, let’s think of ways this could have been said better. How about “Next time, the president will come loaded for bear?”

Not sure it could be said “better”. It’s ironic, in a way, but today’s just a couple of weeks out from the election and the common lectionary pops up that gem of a lesson from Mark with the rich young ruler who asks Jesus what he needs to do to have eternal life. Jesus asks if he knows the commandments and the young guy says yes. Jesus, the text tells us, loves him and then goes all Franciscan on him and tells him to sell all his “stuff” and give it to the poor if he really wants to be saved. Rich guy can’t hang.

There’s a number of interpretations that are commonly used for this text, some closer to reality than others. Still it’s pretty blatantly said that too much stuff you can’t get rid of keeps you stuck and unable to move forward. I’m not sure there could be a better metaphor for the modern GOP than that.
