It’ll happen eventually, the theological basis for Al Qaeda,ISIS,Boko Haram, etc has been around a while so it’s not going to disappear any time soon. The anti-Islamists are always going on about Fatwas but I think the non-centalized structure of Islam potentially makes it a very adaptable religion. Unfortunately the “conservatives” (i’ll use that term loosely) have a lot of influence now, but that will change.

“Conservatives” would perhaps better be replace with “heretics”. The Islamic tradition I was taught says quite clearly that Wahhabism and Salafism are heresies, and in its more extreme manifestations, outright blasphemy, as those groups tend to give greater weight to the hadith then they do the Qur’an, as they regard the Qur’an as ‘insufficient’.

In other words, they’re putting the words of men (the hadith) above the word of God (the Qur’an). That’s shirk in Islam, idolatry.
