“Miz” was pretty common in the south. I also have heard “Mrs” pronounced as “Mizriz” or “Misriz”.
And I always hated seeing the more common form of identifying a married woman, as in “Mrs. Howard Smith” or in announcements as Jennie (Mrs. Howard) Smith.
Talk about quaint. : )
Back when I was a reporter in western KY, I sometimes had to take calls from the funeral homes calling in obits. I learned that “missus” referred to a woman who was married at the time of her death and “mizriz” meant she was a widow at the time of her death.
