The thing there is that the Amish don’t engage in statutory rape and polygamy, practices which America society strongly opposes (mostly its the former, of course). Also, though, is the fact that while the Amish use strong social pressure, they do not use force retain their adherents, while the FLDS does use force. Those two facts explain the differing attitudes. A young woman who wants out of the Amish world may leave, whereas a young person (especially a girl) who wants to leave the FLDS may well be forcibly prevented from doing so.

The FLDS would also forcibly expel teenage boys because they represented a competitive threat to the dominant males in the sect, and these young men were totally unprepared to fend for themselves.
